We headed to the State Fair on Saturday, and stayed pretty much all day. They were having a veterans recognition days event and had tanks, a motorcycle parade, and other interesting military recognition stuff. I saw all the animals, and took pictures until my camera batteries died, then changed them out and took... no more. The other set of batteries I had with me were already dead, which I hadn't realized when I grabbed them as backup. Sad.
I saw goats and sheep, pigs (smelly!), cows, chickens, ducks, pheasants (exotic varieties even, and alas by that point the camera batteries were dead), and horses ranging from knee-high baby minis to draft horses over 6 feet tall at the shoulder. Neat!
We ate funnel cake and looked at exibits, talked to some of the authors at their table, and looked at shops. I went to the artisans' area, which had some really neat work. Lots of people doing glasswork this year. Took sit around and rest breaks, and watched a canine agility show. All in all, a very fun time, though I ached like crazy for a day or more afterward (I was already sore by mid-afternoon while we were still there)

Chasing the Storm
Saturday night, Bonnie sent me a text message saying there was a thunderstorm warning alert for our county on TV. This is a significant event because, though we get massive amounts of rain, we rarely see lightning. So of course I went outside to have a look. I LOVE thunderstorms. Wolf Boy was none too happy about it, having had a few very close calls with lightning... but came out and admired the show as well. Hans came over and watched with us, and Wolf Boy persuaded some of the neighbors to come watch as well, even though one of them was so terrified of the storm that she jumped every time there was thunder. Hans said that in his 10 years living up here, it was the greatest light show he's ever seen from a storm.
When things died down, Hans went home, and Wolf Boy and I went over to the neighbor's, where we pooled our food, ate, and watched a T-rex documentary, followed by one on octopi, then headed home.
Sunday night there was lightning again, and we tried to stand around in one of the fields on campus to watch it, where the view wouldn't be obstructed by trees and lights. Things had just started picking up when Wolf Boy and Hans decided it was time to go home to bed... only midnight! (party poopers) I drove out a mile or two from town and pulled into a field access, where I parked and watched the storm. Took some pictures of the moon, when it creeped in and out of the clouds, and tried to get a shot (or some video) of the lightning. No success there, unfortunately. There was music playing from someplace nearby at first... a farmhouse down the road, I think? It went well with the nighttime scene and occasional lightning flashes. I also saw a possum wandering down the road. The storm picked up, but seemed always out of reach, with the lightning and thunder dancing across the coast range but never coming into the valley, and eventually I went home.

Slow Weekend
I slept most of Saturday (after staying up all night Friday) while Wolf Boy entertained himself with anime and video games. Sunday we did laundry at Hans' place. We watched several episodes of Myth Busters and played chess while our clothes washed.
Today was payday, so we headed to the store and got groceries and misc household supplies. Not terribly exciting, but day to day life isn't all that dramatic around here. ^_^

The Sneaky Wolf-Boy
Or Happy Anniversary
July 14th, Wolf Boy and I had our first anniversary. I saw him off to work, took a nap, and got some work done on the job-search front. Then Bonnie showed up at my door just before noon. She and I walked to the college with her dogs in tow. I printed out a few job apps from online and sent a fax. Then we headed back to get my (air conditioned) car. We were headed to her parents' air conditioned house, and talking about going shopping for interview clothes from there...
As I walked past the apartment I saw my husband go zipping out the back gate as fast as he could run. My first thought was that he'd gotten in trouble for something and been sent home from work, so I almost panicked. I looked inside the apt, and discovered there had been CLEANING going on. Ok. Weird. So I cornered him and Hans (who was with him) and found out that he had the day off... and that Bonnie was supposed to keep me away from the house until late afternoon. Hans had seen us walking up and panicked, thinking we were heading in and they'd get caught. (As it turned out, if they'd stayed inside, we'd have walked right by and driven off and I'd have been none the wiser)
After a few minutes of confused exchanges amongst the four of us, Bonnie and I headed to her parents' as planned, to bask in the cool of the AC. We talked, watched TV, and I finished the app I'd started on earlier. Then Wolf Boy called and told me to come over to Hans' place, which is right across from where we were. I did, and was greeted with an exquisite London broiled steak, potato salad, pasta salad, cherries, chips, cheetos, and Mtn. Dew. I couldn't eat it all, but it was wonderful!
I took Bonnie back to my place to get her car and turned in the job app, then went home for a nap.
Apparently Wolf Boy had this all planned out for AGES. He'd told me he couldn't get the day off work, which I believed because his employers have been rather uncooperative about things lately. He had the next day off, too! So we got to spend some time together for our anniversary that I hadn't expected.
I love my Wolf Boy!

Because So Much Is Riding On Your Tires
I'd recommend that everyone watch this newsclip. It's a rather unpleasant wake-up call.
